PEDESTRIAN VIEW AT THE VINE STREET EXPRESSWAY, PHILADELPHIA //
Project Partner: Danny Ortega      Competition Host: BLT Architects
First Place in 24-Hour Charrette Competition
Slow & Steady is an incremental mixed-use development to be customized and constructed gradually over time in order to (1) address urban wounds inflicted by the Vine Street Expressway and (2) prepare for a radicalized future of housing in a post-COVID era. Pre-fabricated units of housing and retail are installed within a porous "placeholder slab" over time, which allows for flexible solutions to the Philadelphia affordable housing market, takes advantage of efficient construction, and quick responses to housing needs in an unpredictable market. The project integrates within its context to create a complete environment of accessible pedestrian public spaces, housing, event galleries, outdoor amphitheater, retail, farmer's market, and urban landmark.
